RUUM studio has drawn on vintage design for a flat in Łódź, pairing it with simple built-in cabinetry and minimalist furniture. The architects kept the overall scheme contemporary and sought a restrained palette dominated by browns, beiges and dark wood tones. Stronger colours appear mainly in prints and posters. The furnishings also include striking lamps and a boldly patterned rug.
Vintage references and simple cabinetry
The design brings contemporary minimalism together with references to earlier decades. The architects wanted to draw on older motifs in selected furniture forms and details, interpreting these references freely and pairing them with contemporary elements.
Simple cabinetry and minimalist furniture form a backdrop to lamps, prints, posters and individual objects with striking shapes. Alongside the pared-back forms are softer lines inspired by designs from the past.

Stronger colours in prints and posters
The architects used stronger colours sparingly. Beiges, browns and dark wood dominate, with more saturated hues appearing mainly in prints and posters against the flat’s subdued backdrop.
The furniture and lighting selection includes individual pieces with bolder forms. There is also a rug with a bold pattern. Pattern therefore extends beyond the artworks on the walls, although these provide most of the colour accents.

Wood, textiles and metal details
Wood features prominently in the design, its dark tones complementing the palette of browns and beiges. It is used alongside soft textiles, with their textures set against metal elements in the furnishings.

Metal appears in handles, furniture components, light fittings and small decorative objects. Its cooler appearance contrasts with the warm colours of the wood and the soft fabrics.
Vintage pieces can work well with contemporary interiors when the references are selective rather than literal. If you’re planning a similar project, architects and interior designers from across Poland can be found in the PLNDesign directory: https://plndesign.com/directory/
