From the construction industry to her own studio – Edyta Sowińska’s professional career
Edyta Sowińska’s relationship with design has been developing since her early childhood. Growing up alongside her father, an engineer, in an environment closely connected to the construction industry, soon evolved into a conscious choice of professional path. The designer chose an education at the intersection of art and business, gaining knowledge at institutions in Chicago, Warsaw and Nowy Sącz. She obtained her specialist degree in Interior Architecture in 2015 from the University of Technology in Katowice, after which she established Edyta Sowińska Interior Design. More than two decades of experience in the construction and property sectors have enabled her to develop a perspective that extends well beyond aesthetics. In her understanding, design is a discipline that demands responsibility, strategic thinking and a solid foundation of knowledge.

What values and outlook guide your design work? What are your priorities in creating interior designs?
Interior design is, for me, a profoundly personal process, as each commission involves entering the private world of my clients. It is a responsibility I approach with great attentiveness. Before any concept is developed, the most important element is dialogue – gaining a clear understanding of the lifestyle, needs and aspirations of those I design for. I seek to understand what emotions a space should evoke and what role it is intended to play in everyday life.
I create bespoke interiors that are thoughtfully conceived and meticulously resolved in every detail. Aesthetics are essential, yet they never exist independently of functionality. Proportion, ergonomics and harmony are fundamental to my work, as they establish a sense of balance and calm. I believe that a well-designed interior has a tangible impact on well-being – it should support the energy of its occupants, bring clarity to space and facilitate daily living. The synergy of beauty and utility is the cornerstone of my design philosophy.
Do you have a favourite interior design style? If so, what kind?
I design contemporary interiors with a timeless aesthetic and a subtle note of elegance. I do not follow passing trends, and I advise my clients against doing so. My priority is to create spaces that will remain visually compelling and function seamlessly for years to come. I work with classic palettes – black, greys, beiges and earthy tones – which provide a refined backdrop for everyday living. Art is also an integral element of my projects. It is through art that a space acquires individuality and emotional resonance, complementing architecture on a sensory level.
What materials and technologies do you most like to use in your projects?
I deliver interiors of a higher standard, where the quality of materials is an absolute priority. I never recommend solutions that I would not choose for my own home. I most frequently work with natural materials – stone, timber and fine textiles – as they age beautifully and contribute to a timeless character. I collaborate exclusively with trusted suppliers and artists whose craftsmanship, precision and aesthetic sensitivity I greatly value. This ensures that every project is resolved to the smallest detail, and that the final outcome represents a synthesis of superior workmanship and authentic character.
What are your experiences of working with clients? What do you think is the key to a successful collaboration?
The key to successful collaboration, for me, is above all trust, efficient communication and openness. I make a conscious effort not to create artificial distance. Interior design is a long-term process, lasting from several weeks to as much as two or three years. For this reason, I place great value on a comfortable working relationship and ensure that my clients feel at ease and secure throughout the process. The clearest testament to the quality of our collaboration is the fact that many clients return with further commissions. I am fortunate to work with people with whom I genuinely share a strong understanding, and I value that greatly.
Can you describe the most interesting project you have worked on? Which projects have presented the greatest challenge or are particularly noteworthy?
Most recently, it was the design of a 250-square-metre hytta in the Norwegian mountains. Beyond the design work itself, the clients were keen for me to immerse myself in the local tradition and culture, which play a fundamental role in the Norwegian approach to architecture and everyday life. As a result, the project became more than an interior commission – it was an attempt to capture the spirit of the place and express it within a contemporary framework. I found immense inspiration in the region’s closeness to nature, the honesty and simplicity of materials, and the deep respect for craftsmanship. Working on this project reaffirmed how essential cultural and landscape contexts are, and how profoundly they can enrich the creative process. It is an experience that will remain with me for a long time.

In practice, however, the majority of our clients choose a comprehensive design service combined with interior architectural supervision during the implementation phase.
